In 2025, CHINT played a key role in the construction of the Boucle de Ferlo 225kV High-Voltage Transmission Grid Project in Senegal, contributing critical power equipment to strengthen grid interconnection and improve electricity supply reliability in the country’s northern regions.
Commissioned by SENELEC, Senegal’s national power utility, the project is a strategic component of the government’s Plan Sénégal Émergent (PSE). It aims to enhance regional grid connectivity, support economic development, and lay a solid foundation for future energy exchange across the Ferlo region.
Project Overview
The Boucle de Ferlo project covers the construction of three new 225kV substations—Ndioum, Touba 2, and Linguère—along with associated high-voltage transmission lines. Once completed, the project significantly enhances the capacity and reliability of Senegal’s transmission network, ensuring stable power supply to multiple key towns and surrounding areas.
CHINT Scope of Supply
As a core equipment supplier, CHINT delivered a comprehensive portfolio of high-voltage power equipment for the project, including:
- 225kV 30MVAr Variable Shunt Reactors (VSR)
- 225/130kV 40MVA Power Transformers
- 225/30kV 80MVA Power Transformers
Notably, the 225kV 30MVAr Variable Shunt Reactor represents CHINT’s first product at this voltage and capacity level. The successful commissioning of the VSRs in October 2024 marks a major milestone in CHINT’s advancement into high-end transmission grid applications and reactive power compensation solutions.
Technical Challenges
The project posed several key challenges:
- Complex design requirements for high-voltage Variable Shunt Reactors, demanding robust performance in terms of electrical, thermal, and mechanical stability
- Stringent reliability requirements to ensure long-term, stable operation within the national transmission network
- Harsh desert climate conditions, including high temperatures and dust exposure, placing elevated demands on equipment durability and environmental adaptability
Through rigorous engineering design, strict quality control, and close coordination with the EPC contractor and end user, CHINT successfully addressed these challenges and ensured smooth equipment delivery and commissioning.
The Boucle de Ferlo project delivers substantial long-term value to Senegal’s power system by enhancing grid interconnection capacity and enabling more efficient regional power transmission. It significantly improves the reliability and quality of electricity supply for local communities and industries, while strengthening voltage regulation and reactive power management to support stable grid operation. Aligned with Senegal’s national development strategy, the project also lays a solid foundation for future energy exchange and sustainable economic growth.
The successful implementation of the Boucle de Ferlo 225kV project further demonstrates CHINT’s capabilities in high-voltage transmission equipment, system reliability, and complex grid environments. As Senegal continues to advance its energy infrastructure under the PSE framework, CHINT remains committed to delivering reliable, innovative, and sustainable power solutions that support long-term regional development.
