165-ton Transformer Successfully Shipped: CHINT Sets a New Paradigm for Global Heavy-Duty Delivery

APR 27, 2026

Delivering a 165-ton transformer is not just about transportation—it’s about redefining reliability, efficiency, and scalability in global project execution.

Recently, a 165-ton ultra-large transformer was successfully loaded and shipped via RoRo operations at Haitong Terminal, Shanghai Nangang Port, marking its official departure to a project site in Spain. The unit, rated at 400kV and 220MVA, represents a typical out-of-gauge cargo, placing extremely high demands on both manufacturing excellence and international logistics capabilities. This milestone not only demonstrates successful project delivery, but also marks a new breakthrough for CHINT in the global delivery of ultra-heavy electrical equipment.

Industry Challenge: How to Deliver Oversized Equipment Safely and Efficiently?

Traditionally, ultra-heavy and oversized cargo has been transported by heavy-lift vessels. However, recent geopolitical shifts have highlighted several limitations:

  • Surging export demand has tightened vessel availability, leading to scheduling constraints and reduced reliability
  • Loading and lifting operations are high-risk and require precise planning, with strict environmental conditions
  • Multi-port calls often result in longer transit times and higher port-related costs

In high-standard, time-sensitive international projects, customers are no longer asking only “Can it be delivered?”—but rather, “Can it be delivered safely, efficiently, and with certainty?”

Innovative Solution: A Safer and More Efficient RoRo Model

To meet project requirements, CHINT, together with its partners, introduced an innovative MAFI trailer + RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) vessel solution for this 165-ton oversized transformer, enabling efficient transportation of ultra-heavy equipment.

This approach delivers three key advantages:

Safer

By replacing high-risk lifting operations with roll-on handling, structural stress and impact on the equipment are significantly reduced.

More Efficient

Optimized loading and unloading processes shorten the overall delivery cycle by approximately 20 days compared with conventional solutions.

More Controllable

Marine-grade lashing combined with end-to-end monitoring ensures full traceability and verifiable transport conditions throughout the journey.

The successful implementation of this solution validates the feasibility of RoRo transportation for 165-ton class transformers, setting an important benchmark for the industry.

Beyond a Single Delivery: Building a Replicable Capability

This is not just a one-off innovation, but a scalable and replicable delivery model:

  • Applicable to even heavier equipment (150-ton class and above)
  • Capable of further cost optimization through scaled application

As use cases continue to expand, this model is expected to deliver increasingly competitive solutions in cost, efficiency, and reliability.

Delivering Greater Reliability for Global Customers

Backed by deep integration across manufacturing, engineering, and global logistics resources, CHINT continues to strengthen its global delivery capabilities for ultra-heavy equipment.

From the earliest design stage—where transportability and delivery feasibility are already considered—to multi-party coordinated execution, CHINT delivers not only equipment, but integrated solutions for complex global projects.

Against the backdrop of accelerating global energy transition and infrastructure upgrades, the safe and efficient delivery of large-scale power equipment has become a critical factor in project success. The successful shipment of this 165-ton transformer not only showcases CHINT’s manufacturing strength in the heavy equipment domain, but also reflects its growing capabilities in complex global project execution and delivery innovation.

Looking ahead, CHINT will continue to empower global customers with safer, more efficient, and more competitive integrated solutions—enabling projects worldwide to move forward with confidence.
